Firefighters have been praised for their swift action in saving a bingo hall during a fierce blaze in Leeds this morning.
Ten fire engines and three aerial appliances from around West Yorkshire were initially called to the fire in Eyres Avenue, Armley, Leeds at 03.02am. Half of the building, which in total is about 40mx80m, is used as a bingo hall and the other half as a sauna. Firefighters quickly placed ground monitor water jets inside the building to prevent the fire in the sauna from reaching the bingo hall.
Area Manager Nick Smith, who was incident commander, said: “Firefighters worked in very difficult conditions to tackle the fire when they arrived. They acted quickly to enter the building and stop the fire spreading, which has saved the bingo hall from damage.”
Four fire engines (Stanningley, Killingbeck, Garforth and Cookridge) and one aerial appliance (Bradford) were at the scene this morning to damp down and Firefighters will remain at the scene through the night as they continue to damp down.
Three nearby homes were evacuated due to potential collapse of the building, but residents have since been able to return safely.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
