Preparatory work has begun at North Bridge for Halifax’s new £multi-million leisure centre, marking a major step toward delivering modern, inclusive and sustainable facilities for health, wellbeing and community life.
Halifax’s long-awaited new leisure centre has taken a major step forward, with on-site work now underway at North Bridge ahead of full construction.
The project, part of Calderdale Council’s wider regeneration programme across the borough, is being delivered in partnership with contractor Tilbury Douglas. It promises state-of-the-art facilities designed to support health, wellbeing and active lifestyles, while boosting the local economy.
The new centre will include a six-lane main swimming pool with spectator seating, a learner pool, a refurbished eight-court sports hall, a 120-station fitness suite, three flexible studios, a cycling studio, a children’s adventure play area, a café and a community hub. Dedicated wellbeing spaces will also bring health and community services closer together.
Accessibility and sustainability are at the heart of the scheme, with features such as a Changing Places facility for disabled people, energy-efficient air source heat pumps, and innovative drainage systems to reduce flood risk.
Cllr Sarah Courtney, Calderdale Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Transport, described the project as “a once-in-a-generation opportunity to deliver high-quality sports, leisure, wellbeing and social facilities,” adding that designs for the new centre are “looking fantastic.”
Cllr Danielle Durrans, Cabinet Member for Public Services and Communities, emphasised the inclusive vision:
“We want everyone in Calderdale, whatever their background or ability, to have every chance to be more active more often. Inclusivity has been built into the design from the outset, showing our commitment to creating a welcoming place for all.”
Tilbury Douglas Regional Director, Paul Ellenor, said the development will provide “sustainable, modern spaces that meet the needs of the whole community for generations to come.”
Current on-site works include safety fencing, demolition of surrounding buildings, groundworks, tree protection and drainage surveys. Construction of the leisure centre is expected to be completed in 2027.
In the meantime, North Bridge car park will close temporarily from Monday 22 September 2025 to allow work to progress safely.
