Bradford's Alhambra Theatre Set for Major External Makeover

Bradford's iconic Alhambra Theatre is set to undergo major external painting and repair works starting in mid-November. The £-unspecified improvement programme will take approximately 12 to 16 weeks, with scaffolding installed around the building. Bradford Council has confirmed that all performances will continue as planned, with no disruption to audiences.

One of Bradford's most recognisable landmarks, the Alhambra Theatre, is set to undergo a major programme of external repairs and refurbishment as Bradford Council invests in protecting the historic city centre venue for future generations.

The council has announced that work will begin in mid-November 2026 and is expected to last approximately 12 to 16 weeks.

The project will involve extensive external painting, repairs to the building's render and improvements to its decorative lighting.

Despite the scale of the work, the council has reassured the public that the theatre will remain fully operational throughout the refurbishment.

Major repairs to historic building

The Alhambra Theatre is one of Bradford's flagship cultural venues, attracting audiences from across West Yorkshire and beyond.

The building plays an important role in the city's cultural life and makes a significant contribution to the local economy.

Bradford Council says the improvement programme is designed to maintain the building's appearance, address external maintenance requirements and help secure its long-term future.

The works will include assessing the existing external render, removing damaged sections and installing a modern watertight system where required.

All external elevations will also be redecorated, while the theatre's exterior decorative pea lighting will be repaired.

Scaffolding will be installed around the venue to allow contractors to carry out the work safely.

The council initially plans to complete the refurbishment one elevation at a time, rather than working on the entire exterior simultaneously.

All performances to continue as planned

The council has confirmed that the improvement programme will not affect the theatre's scheduled performances.

Visitors attending shows, touring production companies and members of the public should experience no disruption during the works.

All performances will go ahead as planned, even while scaffolding is in place around parts of the building.

The reassurance will be welcome news for theatre audiences, particularly as the project is scheduled to begin ahead of the busy winter entertainment season.

Council welcomes investment in cultural landmark

Councillor Ian Walker, Bradford Council's Executive Member for Neighbourhoods and Communities, welcomed the announcement.

He said:

"I'm delighted that work will begin very shortly to refresh this cultural gem in the city centre. It's great news that this historic venue is getting the investment it needs to maintain its position as a key heritage building and international venue."

Councillor Walker also highlighted the importance of protecting the theatre's architectural character and cultural significance.

He added:

"It is a beautiful building that is an incredibly important part of our cultural heritage, and it is vital that it is refreshed and can continue to be enjoyed by local residents and visitors to our city."

Protecting Bradford's cultural heritage

The refurbishment forms part of Bradford Council's efforts to maintain one of the city's most prominent entertainment and heritage buildings.

The Alhambra has long been a major destination for theatre productions and live entertainment, attracting visitors who also support surrounding businesses, restaurants and hospitality venues.

Council officials say maintaining and improving the building is essential to ensuring its sustainability and continued contribution to Bradford's cultural and economic life.

With work scheduled to begin in mid-November, the external transformation is expected to continue into early 2027.

The council has not specified the total cost of the project.
