Two people have been arrested in connection with a bank robbery in Greater Manchester.
Shortly after 9.10am on Tuesday 7 August police were called to the Vernon Building Society on London Road in Hazel Grove to reports that a man threatened staff with a knife and had stolen the contents of the safe.
According to eyewitnesses, the man had been hiding in the roof of the building and had jumped down through the ceiling before holding a knife up to staff and forcing open the safe.
Armed police were quickly on the scene and following a search of the area a 34-year-old man was arrested almost two miles away.
A 31-year-old woman was also arrested in connection with the robbery in a car at the Merseyway carpark in Stockport.
Detective Inspector Gina Brennand from GMP’s Stockport borough said: “Thanks to the quick actions of officers we were able to make two arrests in connection with this terrifying robbery.
“Staff and local residents were obviously left completely shaken by this, so I am glad we can reassure them with this news.
“This robbery was not your average bank robbery, the fact the offender was in the ceiling of the building is concerning and we have a full team investigating when and how he got up there.
“A red Fiat 500 car has been seized in connection with this incident on Lever Street, just behind the building. We would like to hear from anyone who may have any information about when the vehicle appeared there.
“Although we have two people in custody, our enquiries will continue and we would welcome anyone with any information to come and talk to police. No matter how small, what you know may help our investigation.”
