Bradford Council’s executive committee is to consider proposals for a scheme to reduce traffic congestion in Keighley town centre.
A report will be considered which lists the options for improvements to road layouts in Keighley and will recommend that they approve three options.
The report recommends that the Council approves a series of 13 individual measures that can be delivered in a short space of time to cut down journey times for drivers.
The 13 measures include: changing the traffic light priorities at the junctions at either end of Cavendish Street; changing the traffic light priorities at pedestrian crossings; introducing two lanes of traffic southbound on North Street between the junctions of Cavendish Street and High Street; removing four parking spaces on East Parade; and making Albert Street a one-way street between the junction of North Street and Scott Street.
The money to build this scheme will come from funding already allocated by the Executive for measures to reduce traffic congestion in Keighley.
The report will also ask the committee to approve the development of a medium term scheme which would see alterations to the operation of the bus station, the widening of North Street and reconfiguring road space between the junctions of Cavendish Street and High Street. This scheme would depend on acquiring land from the development of the former Keighley College site.
The committee will also be asked to approve a longer term scheme for a one-way system via Gresley Road and East Parade.
Both the medium and long term schemes will require securing further funding from the West Yorkshire Combined Authority Transport Fund.
Coun Val Slater, Deputy Leader of Bradford Council, said: "We understand the frustrations that many drivers travelling through Keighley town centre experience. There wasn’t a great deal of support from members of the public for the initial proposed gyratory system. It is clear that something needs to be done as soon as possible and we feel that the 13 short term options will go some way to dealing with the issues pending the introduction of a wider scheme.”
