A Bradford MP has branded Boris Johnson as Islamophobic.
The former foreign secretary has come under fire following the publication of his Daily Telegraph column in which he referred to women wearing burkas looking like “letter boxes”.
In response to Denmark's introduction of a ban on burkas in public places, Johnson said he opposed a ban on the face-covering veils but described them as “absolutely ridiculous”.
Naz Shah, MP for Bradford West and shadow minister for women and equalities, has written to International Development Secretary Penny Mordaunt and Tory party chairman Brandon Lewis over Mr Johnson's comments.
She asked on social media “what action will be taken against Boris Johnson for his ugly and naked Islamophobia”.
The Labour MP has come under scrutiny over racism in the past herself, having apologised for what she has admitted was anti-Semitic language in a Facebook post from 2014.
