People across Bradford District and Craven are being asked to make sure they use the most appropriate service for their needs as demand increases across the country.
GPs are reminding people to choose wisely when it comes to deciding which health service to use.
The local Clinical Commissioning Group says that A&E departments and emergency services are particularly busy at the moment, as are most areas across the UK. The group added that the latest cold turn in the weather “will likely see an increase in demand for accident and emergency services”, seeing waiting times increase for those who attend for minor illnesses or injuries that could be better treated elsewhere.
Dr Andy Withers, GP and clinical chair at NHS Bradford District CCG said: “Teams at our local hospitals - Airedale General and Bradford Royal Infirmary - are working incredibly hard to deliver high quality patient care and we want to make sure our A&E departments are there for those people most in need.
“We can all do our bit to make sure we don’t put unnecessary pressure on our emergency services by choosing the most appropriate service when we don’t have a serious or life-threatening illness of injury.
“A&E can help if you have severe chest pain or difficulty breathing, severe bleeding, a serious head injury or broken bones. For common health conditions such as coughs or colds, your local pharmacist can provide help and advice on the best treatments for you.
“You can also find information on common illnesses and injuries by visiting the NHS website at www.nhs.uk. The site can also help you find your nearest local pharmacy.
“If you’re unsure or have an urgent health need, but it’s not a life-threatening emergency, the friendly teams at NHS 111 will be able to help.”
