The £46.1 million transformation of the main entrance to Leeds City Station is entering its final stages, with parts of the new gateway expected to begin opening to the public in October.
The Leeds Station Sustainable Travel Gateway is expected to begin opening in October, as work on the £46.1 million transformation of the station’s main entrance reaches its final stages.
The major scheme aims to create a safer, more accessible and more welcoming environment for people using Leeds City Station, while helping the station accommodate increasing demand for rail travel.
The project is being delivered by Leeds City Council on behalf of Network Rail, in partnership with the West Yorkshire Combined Authority.
Construction has taken place alongside essential Network Rail maintenance to reinforce the historic underground structure beneath New Station Street, which supports much of the station above.
By carrying out both projects at the same time, the partners say they have reduced disruption and provided better value for money compared with completing the work separately.
Although Network Rail will take over the scheme once it is fully completed, discussions are under way to allow some areas to open earlier.
The new public realm area and steps connecting Bishopgate Street and New Station Street could open in early to mid-October.
Contractor Balfour Beatty is also installing and testing new lifts.
The lifts connecting New Station Street and Bishopgate Street are expected to open in mid-October, providing step-free access between the two streets.
Once these lifts are operational, the station’s taxi rank is expected to relocate from Princes Square to Bishopgate Street.
Lifts serving the new cycle hub beneath the station are expected to follow in late October.
Councillor James Lewis, Leader of Leeds City Council, said the project would create a safer, more welcoming and accessible environment and help the station’s facilities keep pace with growing passenger numbers.
The £46.1 million scheme is funded through the West Yorkshire Combined Authority’s Transforming Cities Fund programme, which aims to make walking, cycling and public transport easier.
