A partnership project between the Friends of Black Carr Wood and Bradford Council has been awarded a grant of £45,408 from the funding body WREN, to improve community access to the woodland.
The money awarded by WREN’s FCC Community Action Fund, will be used to create a more welcoming and accessible entrance and approach to the woodland from Ned Lane. Improvements to the existing routes through the wood will also be made so people of all abilities can enjoy the woodlands as well as making them more hard-wearing and suitable for any farm traffic using the site.
The scheme has been designed by Groundwork and will restyle the existing entrance from Ned Lane making it easier for people using wheelchairs and mobility scooters or buggies to access the wood.
The new layout will also make it safer for school parties arriving by mini-bus as they will be able to pull through the open the gates to drop children off. The addition of new benches and better way marking will mean people will be able to venture further into the woodland.
Tong Ward Councillor Alan Wainwright and Chair of the Holme Wood Partnership Board, said: "This project will provide a real boost to the people of Tong and Holme Wood. It will help make it possible for folk of all ages and abilities to enjoy more of this ancient woodland right on our doorstep. It is fantastic that WREN has awarded us this money and we’re really looking forward to it taking shape in 2016.”
Penny Beaumont, WREN’s grant manager for Yorkshire & Humber, said: "We’re delighted to be supporting the Bradford - Black Carr Woods Community Access project and pleased our funding will improve the access for cyclists, walkers, horse riders and educational groups alike. WREN is always happy to consider grant applications for projects that make a difference to local communities and we’re really looking forward to seeing this one take shape soon.”
Denise Lindley, Secretary of Friends of Black Carr Wood, said: "We have been working to draw attention to the woodland and let people know what a great place it is to visit. We hope that the community access improvements will be completed during spring 2016 and will encourage more people to enjoy the benefits of a woodland visit.”
WREN is a not for profit business that awards grants for community, biodiversity and heritage projects from funds donated by FCC Environment through the Landfill Communities Fund.
