A non-league footballer has died after collapsing on the pitch during a match in Brighouse on Monday.
Shaw Lane FC defender Daniel Wilkinson, collapsed during a cup game at Brighouse's St Giles Road stadium.
The 26 year old was treated on the pitch before being taken to Calderdale Royal Hospital in Halifax. The match was abandoned.
The club’s chairman Craig Wood said on the club’s Facebook page “It's with great sadness that we have to announce the tragic loss of Daniel Wilkinson, our thoughts and prayers are with him family and friends at this time. The club would like to thank everyone for their heartfelt messages and thoughts that we have received throughout the night.” A Book of Condolence has been opened in the Conservatory at Shaw Lane.
Tributes have been pouring in, on Hull City Tiger's webpage a statement reads:
"We were both shocked and saddened to learn of the death of former player Daniel Wilkinson on Monday night.
Daniel, who was a former player for our Centre of Excellence and was part of the U18s team that won the Youth Alliance North-East Conference in 2010, died after collapsing on the pitch whilst playing for Evo-Stick First Division South side Shaw Lane AFC.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Daniel’s family at this incredibly difficult time, along with his friends and everybody at Shaw Lane AFC."
