We are, and will remain, strong and close partners on trade, security and defence. I look forward to working with President-elect Donald Trump, building on these ties to ensure the security and prosperity of our nations in the years ahead."
Property tycoon, former reality TV star Donald Trump will become the 45th US president after a seismic victory over Democrat Hillary Clinton.
The 70 year old Republican nominee confounded pre-election polling to claim swing states, winning the key states of Florida, Ohio and Pennsylvania.
Mr Trump, who will take office in January with a Republican-dominated Congress, called for unity and told his cheering supporters
"No dream is too big; no challenge too big. America will no longer settle for anything less than the best. We must reclaim our country's destiny and dream big and bold and daring. I will always keep America first."
