A 17-year-old boy who posted images to social media, of a home-made bomb said he had no intention of carrying out an attack.
The teenager was arrested by counter-terrorism police after being reported by a member of public.
He hoped people would think he wanted to blow up mosques and told court “I find it easier to shock people than have a proper conversation.”
Leeds Crown Court also heard how he posted offensive comments to the internet, an emoji of a figure in a turban with a gun pointing to his head and an image of Bradford.
He has denied the preparation of terrorist acts.
The trial continues.
