Priyadarshan Says He ‘Hates’ Making Comedies as He Switches Gears with Haiwaan

Filmmaker Priyadarshan has revealed that despite being responsible for some of Bollywood's best-known comedies, he no longer enjoys making them as he prepares for the release of his new thriller Haiwaan.

Veteran filmmaker Priyadarshan has revealed that he no longer enjoys making comedy films, despite directing some of the genre's biggest Bollywood favourites.

Speaking ahead of the release of Haiwaan, Priyadarshan said the success of films such as Hera Pheri ultimately left him associated heavily with comedy, even though his earlier work included serious dramas.

He told Hindustan Times that he now wants to change direction, describing Haiwaan as his first serious Hindi film in years.

The new thriller brings Akshay Kumar and Saif Ali Khan together on screen again, with Akshay taking on a darker role.

Priyadarshan also revealed that he initially thought Akshay might refuse the opportunity to play the villain in the film.

The director's comments are particularly notable because of his long association with hugely popular Hindi comedies, including Hera Pheri.

Priyadarshan said he does not want audiences to expect a particular "signature" from him and is keen to continue working across different genres.

Haiwaan is now one of the major upcoming Bollywood releases, with its pairing of Akshay Kumar and Saif Ali Khan generating considerable interest.
