Man Injured Attempting To Stop Man Stealing Car With Son Inside

Police are appealing for witnesses after a man suffered significant leg injuries trying to stop another man from stealing his car with his son inside.

The offence happened in Cleveland Road, Marsh, around 7.30am on Monday, 30 May.

The victim, a 38-year-old man, and his 13-year-old son were in his white Toyota Avensis approaching the junction with Halifax Road when he has seen a man walking in the road. After the victim beeped the horn to get the man's attention, the man approached the vehicle and hit the rear offside quarter light window causing it to smash. The man has then grabbed and pulled the victim from his vehicle and started to reverse the car. The victim managed to grab the steering wheel but the man continued to reverse the vehicle which has run over the victim's leg before colliding with a garden wall. The man has then got out of the vehicle and stood on the victim's other leg before running off along Cleveland Road towards Halifax Road.

The victim suffered injuries to both legs and minor injuries to his head, arms and torso during the incident. His 13-year-old son was not injured.

The suspect is described as black, aged in his 30s, tall, of muscular build, with a pointed jaw line and facial stubble. He was wearing a Bluetooth headset.

Detective Constable Mick Cummings, of Kirklees District CID, said: "This was clearly an extremely frightening experience for the victim and his son. The victim has suffered nasty leg injuries trying to stop this man from driving away in his vehicle with his son still inside.

"We are conducting extensive enquiries to identify the man involved and as part of this are seeking the public's help in providing any information they may have about this incident. Anyone with information is asked to call Kirklees District CID via 101 or independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

"We understand that this offence may cause concern in the wider community but would stress that we are treating this as an isolated incident and that robberies with this level of violence are extremely rare."
