Kirklees man jailed for nine years for causing death by dangerous driving

The driver of a converted camper van that smashed into a car killing a 28-year-old man has been jailed for nine years.

Adam Kershaw, 29, of Booth Street, Cleckheaton who was uninsured, unlicensed and almost three times the drink drive limit, was at the wheel of a seven-and-a-half tonne Mercedes box van when it struck Joseph Keane’s vehicle.

The incident occurred on the A65 near Ingleton in North Yorkshire on July 13 2018, with Kershaw pleaded guilty to causing Mr Keane’s death by dangerous driving at Bradford Crown Court in November.

He also admitted causing death by driving while uninsured and otherwise than in accordance with a licence as well as possessing drugs on the same day as the crash.

During Kershaw’s sentencing on Tuesday, Judge Jonathan Rose described the incident as the “worst case of dangerous driving” he had come across, saying: “You have pleaded guilty to six offences arising out of the events of the 13th of July 2018.

“The principal offence though is your driving that caused the death of a young man who had everything to live for and a very bright and promising future ahead of him.”

Kershaw was jailed for nine years and was also been banned from driving for 11 and a half years.Adam Kershaw, 29, of Booth Street, Cleckheaton who was uninsured, unlicensed and almost three times the drink drive limit, was at the wheel of a seven-and-a-half tonne Mercedes box van when it struck Joseph Keane’s vehicle.
