An underage hit-and-run driver who mowed down and killed a grandmother-of-10 in Birmingham has been locked up.
West Midlands Police launched an investigation after Zainab Bibi was struck by a Fiat Marea while trying to cross Burney Lane, Alum Rock.
The illegal driver, who was 15 at the time, sped away following the collision at around 2pm on 14 July last year before abandoning the car in a street in Ward End.
Mrs Bibi, aged 68 from Birmingham, was taken to hospital with serious injuries but died hours later.
The teenager, who bought the car himself in the weeks before, was arrested after handing himself into police.
CCTV evidence showed the driver, who had passengers on board, was speeding. He did not take evasive action to avoid Mrs Bibi - only sounding the car horn.
The teenager - now 16, who cannot be named for legal reasons - admitted death by dangerous driving and was sentenced to three years at a Youth Offenders Institute at Birmingham Crown Court.
He also pleaded guilty to failing to stop and reporting an accident and will be disqualified from driving for four years.
PC Karl Davies, from the force’s Collision Investigation Unit, said: "The court heard how he was arrogant and showing off for passengers.
Mrs Bibi was an innocent victim of such dangerous behaviour; and her loss has left a big hole for the family. Driving a car whether underage or without a licence can ruin lives."
