Bradford residents urged to ensure they are registered to vote

Bradford's Returning Officer has issued a stark warning ahead of May's local elections

"If you are not registered, you won't be able to vote."

That's the warning from Kersten England, Bradford Council's Chief Executive Officer and Returning Officer.

Bradford Council is backing the Electoral Commission's National Registration Drive, which asks people to spread the word about the importance of voter registration.

Last week the council wrote to every Bradford district household asking people to check their electoral record.

If the details are correct, then no action is necessary, however if the information is inaccurate then people need to notify Bradford Council.

On Thursday 5 May this year, voters in Bradford district go to the polls to elect local government councillors and a Police and Crime Commissioner for West Yorkshire.

A small number of people are turned away at every election because they haven't registered by the legal deadline.

"Being told you can't vote at a polling station can be very frustrating and unfortunately the law doesn't allow new registrations after the deadline date.” warned Kersten England.

"You must be registered by Monday, 18 April 2016 or it will be too late to participate in this year's local and Police and Crime Commissioner elections.

"The good news is registration is easy and only takes only a few minutes.

"All you need is your date of birth and National Insurance number which is on payslips, letters about benefits, tax returns, and some other official correspondence.

"For anyone who isn't already registered, don't put it off, register today!”
