A pioneering figure in British Asian broadcasting, Usha Parmar has played a leading role in the growth and development of Sunrise Radio for more than three decades.

About Usha

Usha Parmar is Chief Executive of Sunrise Radio (Yorkshire) and one of the pioneering figures in British Asian broadcasting.

After initially qualifying as a teacher and later working as a project manager in the technology sector, Usha took on the challenge of leading Bradford City Radio Limited, trading as Sunrise Radio (Yorkshire).

Through vision, determination and leadership, she helped establish Sunrise Radio as an important and trusted voice for South Asian communities, combining broadcasting, business and community engagement.

Her career has been shaped by a commitment to representation, opportunity and ensuring that Asian voices and communities have a strong presence within British media.

Career Highlights

1999

Named Asian Businesswoman of the Year at the inaugural Asian Women of Achievement Awards.

2009

Received the Service to the Community Award from ABDN.

2010

Presented with a special Lifetime Award by the Hindu Cultural Society of Bradford.

2019

Honoured by University Centre Bradford College for her campaigning and community work.

2025

Received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Business Power Awards.

Broadcasting & Community

Throughout her career, Usha has used broadcasting to highlight issues affecting Asian communities, including domestic violence, forced marriage, opportunities for young people and women’s empowerment.

She has also supported the development of new broadcasting talent, helping create opportunities for people from diverse backgrounds to gain experience and build careers within radio and media.

Community engagement has remained central to Usha’s approach to broadcasting, ensuring Sunrise Radio continues to inform, entertain and reflect the audiences it serves.

Supporting the Future of Radio

Usha has also been closely involved in the development of digital radio and Small Scale DAB, helping to create new broadcast opportunities for independent, diverse and community-focused radio services.

This work has formed part of Sunrise Radio’s wider evolution from a traditional local radio service into a growing multi-platform broadcaster.
