Newsroom Special - The fascinating history of Mother's Day

    Newsroom Specials

    Friday, 29 March 2019 - 8 minutes

From young kids making their Mum breakfast in bed, to older children treating their mother to a posh lunch, everyone celebrates Mother's Day in their own, special way. But did you know that Mothering Sunday isn't quite what we think it is? In fact, it’s entirely different to the modern Mother’s Day we know and celebrate every year.

Ahead of Mother's Day this Sunday (31 March), we were joined by historian and author of ‘The Century Girls’, Tessa Dunlop, to discuss the historical Mother’s Day insights revealed to her by the centenarian women featured in her book.

The stories from these incredible women highlight that our modern Mother’s Day is a far cry from the true origins and practices of what was once known as Mothering Sunday.
