Suspected Zika and monkeypox cases in Lahore

Two deadly viruses have been reported for the first time in Pakistan.

Dawn News says that suspected cases of Zika and monkeypox have been reported in the Nawaz Sharif Yakki Gate Hospital, a state-run facility in Lahore.

The Zika virus is spread through an infected species of mosquito and can lead to foetal abnormalities with pregnant mothers.

Monkeypox is a rare viral disease that occurs primarily in remote parts of central and west Africa, near tropical rain forests.

Punjab Health Director General Munir Ahmad said the presence of such viruses if officially confirmed is “a dangerous sign” and the cases are being investigated as a priority.
