The National Democratic Alliance’s candidate for President in India has swept the poll to assume office.
Ram Nath Kovind will become India’s 14th President after winning 65.65 per cent of the votes.
Meira Kumar, from the United Progressive Alliance, was defeated in the presidential race.
The victory did not come as too much of a surprise to observers because around 40 parties had already pledged allegiance to Kovind.
The victor is a lawyer by profession and has represented India in the United Nations in New York. He also addressed the UN General Assembly in October 2002.
