Police investigate possible first Indian death of ‘Blue Whale’ social media dare

Police in India are investigating what may be the first case of a suicide in the country resulting from the ‘Blue Whale’ social media dare.

The dare is believed to have originated in Russia and involves participants in a social media group completing assigned tasks for 50 days.

Those who have taken on the challenge are encouraged to post picture evidence showing they have completed the increasingly extreme tasks, which include self-harming.

On the 50th day the people behind the game instruct the youngsters to commit suicide.

In Mumbai, a 14-year-old boy jumped off the terrace of the residential building in which he lived. He has been identified as Manpreet Singh.

Officers found out about the game from Manpreet’s friends and have confiscated the teenager’s electronic devices to ascertain whether he was a victim of the dare.
