India Kashmir under direct rule

Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir has been put under direct rule.

A coalition between the BJP and the People’s Democratic Party had been controlling the state but chief minister Mehbooba Mufti resigned after the BJP pulled out of the partnership with her party.

The BJP said the three-year alliance had become "untenable" in the wake of increasing violence in the region.

The state's governor will rule until a new coalition is formed or fresh elections are called.
