Antidote - The Victoria Theatre’s new programme for artistes and work that see things from a (slightly) different point of view. Each of the events in our Antidote series are curated by internationally recognised composer, musician and songwriter ABY Vulliamy.

As with all Antidote events, the evening will include a section of musical collaboration between the two acts (who have not worked together before); spontaneous or pre-prepared, but ultimately, something totally unique and event-specific emerges each time.

This event takes place in the Victoria Theatre Green Room Bar.

Celebrating Nature: Creativity out of Chaos

Jo Burke is a folk musician who uses her powerful voice to sing about the natural world; the medicinal plants and ancient natural processes that are being lost or disrupted because we are too busy to notice and take care of them. The traditional songs that Jo performs are drawn predominantly from the British Isles, yet her influences stray beyond it’s borders from the music of the Norwegian hardanger fiddle (which she plays) to traditional Bulgarian folk singing, alongside a quiet echo of an early love for the piano music of Debussy. Jo’s original compositions and re-imagined folk songs remind us to listen, look and learn, and take more care of the nature we live alongside and have relied upon for so many generations. Jo’s moving and eloquent solo set incorporates fiddle and piano to accompany her beautiful and emotive vocals.

James Mainwaring’s 2021 album ‘Mycorrhiza’ is a beautiful, nerve-wracking, unique and highly persuasive musical exploration of humanity’s disruptive and destructive impact on the natural world. Mainwaring’s compositions provoke powerful thoughts, feelings and questions, with sumptuous pastoral arrangements, alongside crunchy and unpredictable improvisation, interspersing exhilarating highs and devastating spaciousness. A Mercury Award nominee for his work with Roller Trio, Mainwaring’s expertise is primarily in jazz, but his influences span all genres of music. For this live sextet, Mainwaring’s alto and tenor sax, flute, voice and electronics combine with Steve Hanley’s drums, with Glen Loach on piano, Fergus Quill on double bass, Michael Bardon on cello and Aby Vulliamy on viola and voice.
