Raj Parmar

    Raj is Director of Spice Entertainment and Sunrise Radio. Under his directorship, Spice Entertainment received a Community Harmony Award for an ‘outstanding contribution to community harmony in the Bradford district’ in 2009. His active involvement in Sunrise Radio has led it to new heights and digital platforms. Most notably, he was also Steering group member of Bradford 2025, Bradford’s bid to be recognised as City of Culture.

    Raj started his career in media at the young age of 13 hosting a weekly show on Sunrise Radio (Yorkshire). In 2001, he opened and operated a restricted radio service, “Mela FM”, covering the Manchester, Rochdale and Oldham area for the Manchester Multicultural Mela His responsibilities included creating revenue, recruiting and training presenters and the promotion of Mela FM at a variety of events across the northern regions.

    In 2002 Raj was asked to cover the breakfast show on London wide radio station Club Asia.

    Raj has a strong belief to constantly learn new skills to make him into a true all round performer. He is an accomplished dancer and has been a part of Signature, Independance and Spice Entertainment (which he heads). Raj has also displayed acting skills and can be seen in a film ‘Ruby and Diamonds’ (2004), a film which was entered and screened at various film festivals around the UK. He has also appeared in ‘Mischief Night’ (2006) and India’s largest drama serial “Saraswati Chandra”.

    Raj has also played the main lead in several Asian Music videos for Bhangra Artists including; Gubi Sandhu's (Sold my Soul medley), RDB (Three), Elusive (Exhibit A).

    Raj displayed his versatile dancing abilities in Channel 4 documentary Big Ballet. Beating almost 500 other aspiring ballet contestants, Raj ultimately won a place in the 18 member dance troupe. Raj received much attention and praise for being the only Asian member of the troupe and one of two males.

    The three-part documentary saw Raj train under legendary dancer Wayne Sleep, and eventually play the role of heinous villain Baron Von Rothbart in the iconic Ballet, Swan Lake. The series received global attention, airing in the UK, US and in France. The series aired on Netflix in Ireland, UK, Australia and Canada.

    Raj has also received glowing recognition for his contributions to Bradford Civic society, over the last 13 years. This recognition has been the result of a number of engagements he has undertaken. These include:

    • Organiser of free self-defence classes for women and children; established blood donor recruitment events across the Bradford District for Delete Blood Cancer – Bradford.
    • 2019/2020 Member of Give Bradford.
    • Trustee of the Alan Foster Trust.
    • Active steering group member for Bradford Disability Games 2021.
    • 2019/2020 Representing Bradford as Ambassador on behalf of Believing in Bradford.
    • Talent Showcase giving the opportunity for young performers to share the stage with established acts to raise vital funds for charities (Barnados / When you wish upon a star)
    • Dhol (Asian Drum) classes
