VAR to be displayed on stadium screens at World Cup

Footage reviewed by video assistant referees (VAR) will be shown on big screens in stadiums at this summer’s World Cup in Russia.

VAR is to be used for the first time in a World Cup, despite criticism of its use at domestic level.

An issue commonly cited is fans being unable to see the process at work when the referee calls for VAR in contentious situations – including penalty decisions and cases of mistaken identity.

During the tournament this summer, the crowd will be told when the technology is being used and why a decision has been reached.

However, Fifa said the replays will not be shown inside the ground while the referee is making a decision, only afterwards so the official is not influenced by the crowd.
