Premier League 2019/20 Game Week 15 Roundup

A full roundup of game week 15 of the Premier League, including the team of the week.

    Crystal Palace 1-0 Bournemouth

Crystal Palace were able to register back-to-back wins for the first time since the start of October on Tuesday, despite being reduced to 10 men early on. Mamadou Sakho’s return to the first team was a short-lived affair after he was sent off for a reckless, high challenge. Bournemouth couldn’t make their one-man advantage count though as full back Jeffrey Schlupp scored for the second time in as many games with a sublime solo goal to hand the Eagles a big win.

    Burnley 1-4 Manchester City

Following an unexpected setback against Newcastle at the weekend, City were back to their best on Tuesday, comfortably beating a Burnley side that looked out of their depth against the reigning champions. Gabriel Jesus grabbed a brace to continue his fine scoring form away from home, while goals from Rodri and Riyad Mahrez sealed the victory. Burnley were able to pull one goal back through Robert Brady, although it proved to be nothing more than a consolation goal.

    Chelsea 2-1 Aston Villa

After two successive defeats in the league, Frank Lampard’s men got back to winning ways against Aston Villa, with Tammy Abraham’s return to the team proving decisive. The England striker - who spent last season on loan at Villa – scored the host’s first and assisted Mason Mount for the second. Mahmoud Hassan gave Villa some home after he levelled the scores at 1-1 in the first half, they weren’t able to hold on against a mercurial Chelsea side.

    Leicester City 2-0 Watford

Not the comfortable win many were expected, but Leicester were nonetheless able to see off the Hornets and keep the pressure on title rivals Liverpool. Watford held the Foxes off until the second half when Jonny Evans got a hand in the face and won a penalty. Vardy converted the resulting spot kick and got Brendan Rodgers’ men off the mark. James Maddison doubled their lead in the dying minutes to ensure Watford stayed rooted to the bottom of the table.

    Southampton 2-1 Norwich City

In yet another relegation six-pointer, Southampton came out victorious once again, winning back-to-back games for the first time this season and moving clear of the relegation zone at the expense of Everton. Danny Ings and Ryan Bertrand were on target for the Saints as they went into the break two goals ahead. Teemu Pukki pulled one back for the Canaries, although it wasn’t enough and Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men were able to escape the drop zone.

Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-0 West Ham United

Wolves extended their unbeaten run to 10 games as they comfortably overcame a struggling West Ham side, filled with talent, yet unable to make it click. Goals from Leander Dendoncker and Patrick Cutrone handed Wolves the victory on Wednesday night, seeing them move up to fifth place in a close-run race for Europa League qualification.

    Manchester United 2-1 Tottenham Hotspur

Jose Mourinho returned to Old Trafford on Wednesday to face his former club and came out second best, seeing his winning start to life as Spurs manager come to an end. Marcus Rashford bagged a brace for the Red Devils with a goal in each half, which proved too much for the Lillywhites. Dele Alli continued his fine run of goalscoring form to give the North Londoners some hope, levelling the scoring before the break, but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men were able to restore their lead and see the game out.

    Liverpool 5-2 Everton

The Merseyside derby was always destined to be a fiery, exciting affair, with the Reds challenging for the title, and the Blues battling against relegation, and Wednesday night’s clash didn’t disappoint. There were 6 goals in the first half, the most amount of goals in any half of a Merseyside derby ever, with the hosts netting the lions share. Divock Origi scored for his fourth consecutive home game against the Toffees to open the scoring before Xherdan Shaqiri, Sadio Mane and a second from Origi saw Liverpool surge into a commanding lead. Michael Keane and Richarlison were on the scoresheet for Everton, but Liverpool were simply far too good for their neighbours from across Stanley Park. A second half strike from Georginio Wijnaldum wrapped the game up and condemned the Toffees to the relegation zone

    Sheffield United 0-2 Newcastle United

Despite seemingly dominating the game, Sheffield United were unable to make their superiority count against an effective Newcastle side. Despite having fewer attacks and only 24% of possession, Steve Bruce’s men were clinical with the chances they created, with Allan Saint-Maximin and Jonjo Shelvey netting either side of half time to hand the Magpies an important three points.

Arsenal 1-2 Brighton and Hove Albion

Freddie Ljungberg remains without a win as interim Arsenal boss as his side fell to a humiliating defeat at the hands of a very impressive Brighton side. The Seagulls were all over Arsenal and made their dominance pay off with a first half goal from Adam Webster. The Gunners came out after the break fighting, with Alexandre Lacazette notching the equaliser, but the North London outfit weren’t able to kick on from their and salvage a result, with the visitors once again taking control of the game before going on to find a winner through Neal Maupay. Arsenal have now only picked up seven points since the start of October and are currently the only team in the Premier League without a win in their last seven games. That’s relegation form.
