Maria Sharapova to play in first major since drugs-ban

Maria Sharapova is to play in her first major tournament since serving a 15-month drugs-ban.

The Russian has been handed a wildcard entry into the US Open main draw.

The 30-year-old was suspended after testing positive for heart disease drug meldonium at the 2016 Australian Open.

She returned to action in April but was denied a wildcard entry into the French Open. She was granted the opportunity to make the Wimbledon main draw through qualifying but was forced to pull out with an injury.

The US Open will take place at Flushing Meadows from 28 August to 10 September.
