Belgian cyclist Michael Goolaerts dies after cardiac arrest

Belgian cyclist Michael Goolaerts has died after suffering from cardiac arrest during Sunday’s Paris-Roubaix.

The 23-year-old fell on the second set of cobbles in the one-day classic in northern France and was airlifted to hospital in Lille. He later died at 9.40pm.

The Veranda's Willems-Crelan team said in a statement: "It is with unimaginable sadness that we have to communicate the passing of our rider and friend Michael Goolaerts.

"For now there will be no further communication as we want to give his close ones time to deal with this terrible loss."

World champion Peter Sagan took victory on the day following a breakaway with 54km of the 257km one-day classic to go. He beat Swiss champion Silvan Dillier in a sprint finish at the famous Roubaix velodrome.
