A programme of improvements to one of Bradford city centre’s busiest routes is getting under way, with changes designed to reduce congestion and make bus journeys more reliable.
Construction work is getting under way on a major programme of improvements to Westgate in Bradford city centre.
Bradford Council says the scheme is intended to reduce congestion, improve the reliability of bus services and make the route safer for pedestrians and cyclists.
Westgate is used by several major bus services, with delays during peak periods currently affecting journey times and reliability.
The Westgate Bus Hotspots scheme will introduce new sections of inbound and outbound bus lanes, improvements to pedestrian crossings and traffic islands, enhanced cycling infrastructure and changes to traffic signals.
The measures are designed to improve overall traffic flow while giving buses more reliable journeys through one of the city centre’s busiest transport corridors.
Work will be carried out in phases, beginning at the junction of Westgate and Baptist Place.
Further details about the timing of individual phases and any associated traffic management arrangements are expected to be announced as the work progresses.
Councillor Andrew Judson, Bradford Council’s Executive Member for Economy, Regeneration and Planning, said the improvements would help tackle congestion while making the area safer and easier for people walking and cycling.
He acknowledged that construction would cause disruption and thanked residents, businesses and road users for their patience.
The Westgate project will take place at a similar time to work connected with Bradford’s wider City Village regeneration programme, which is expected to deliver more than 1,000 new homes, alongside new retail, leisure and business opportunities.
Although the two schemes are separate, Bradford Council says their construction programmes will be aligned where possible to minimise disruption.
The Westgate scheme is funded by the West Yorkshire Combined Authority.
