Work is getting under way on a new railway station in Cheadle, more than 100 years after the Greater Manchester village lost its original station.
Work is beginning on a new railway station in Cheadle, Stockport, more than a century after the village's original station closed.
Cheadle's previous station, located just off the high street, closed in 1917.
Plans for its replacement were given funding approval in 2022 and planning permission followed in 2023. However, the project was subsequently delayed because of concerns about how the additional station could affect train timetables elsewhere on the network.
Stockport Council says that issue has now been resolved following further assessment by Network Rail and Northern Trains.
An earlier proposal which could have resulted in services being removed from Ashley and Plumley has also been dropped.
Initial highways work can now begin, with the new station planned next to Alexandra Hospital.
Once operational, services are expected to connect Cheadle with Stockport town centre, Manchester Piccadilly and Chester.
Stockport Council leader Mark Roberts described the start of work as a "hugely significant moment" for both Cheadle and the wider borough, saying the station could make a major difference to residents, businesses and the area's future prosperity.
Cheadle MP Tom Morrison said the community had waited more than 100 years for the station and believes it will improve access to jobs, schools and other opportunities while helping to reduce traffic on local roads.
The village has around 23,000 residents who are expected to benefit from the new transport connection.
