Police are warning residents, particularly students and young adults, about a growing trend in which criminals offer people money to receive parcels that could contain drugs, weapons or stolen property.
West Yorkshire Police is warning people about a growing criminal trend in which individuals are offered cash to accept parcels on behalf of someone else.
Police say organised criminals are looking for ways to move illegal goods and stolen property without drawing attention to themselves and may recruit people who believe they are simply earning some extra money.
Students and other people who may be financially vulnerable are among those being targeted.
The force warns that parcels could contain illegal drugs, offensive weapons or stolen goods, potentially leaving the person who accepts them facing investigation for offences including possession of controlled drugs, handling stolen goods or money laundering.
Criminals are also using social media platforms to recruit people into accepting packages.
Chief Inspector Michelle Swift of West Yorkshire Police said what might initially appear to be an easy favour or an opportunity to make quick cash could result in a police investigation and criminal record.
She urged people to trust their instincts when something does not feel right and particularly encouraged parents to discuss the risks with their university-age children.
West Yorkshire Police has launched a dedicated information page explaining the warning and the tactics criminals may use.
Anyone who believes they have been targeted can report it to police online or by calling 101. If a crime is in progress or there is an immediate danger to life, people should call 999.
