Plans to restrict a popular West London cut-through using ANPR cameras have sparked opposition from Hounslow Council amid concerns traffic could be pushed onto surrounding roads.
Plans to use ANPR cameras to restrict access to a road linking King Street and the A4 in West London have sparked a disagreement between two neighbouring councils.
Hammersmith and Fulham Council is considering a trial scheme on Weltje Road, close to the boundary with Hounslow, which would restrict access for many motorists from outside the borough.
The council says more than 2,000 vehicles a day currently use Weltje Road and estimates around 90 per cent come from outside Hammersmith and Fulham.
However, the proposal has met opposition from neighbouring Hounslow Council.
Correspondence between a Hounslow Council officer, residents and councillors reportedly indicates that the authority intends to object if Hammersmith and Fulham formally publishes the proposed traffic order.
Concerns centre on the possibility that restricting Weltje Road could simply divert vehicles onto surrounding streets, including Chiswick Lane.
The proposed trial would use Automatic Number Plate Recognition cameras to control access and would largely mirror an existing scheme on nearby Rivercourt Road, another route connecting King Street with the A4.
Under the Rivercourt Road arrangements, local residents can obtain access for visitors, while provisions are also available for local shops and businesses.
Hammersmith and Fulham says its Weltje Road proposal is intended to improve safety.
Councillor Nicole Trehy, the council's Cabinet Member for Climate Emergency and Travel, said lessons from the trial could also be shared with Hounslow.
Opponents argue Weltje Road is an important route to the eastbound A4 for motorists travelling from areas including Chiswick, Acton and Ealing, and fear restrictions could worsen congestion elsewhere.
The scheme remains under consideration and has not yet been introduced.
