The University of Bradford has received a prestigious award for their commitment to tackling women’s inequality in higher education.
The Equality Challenge Unit (ECU) has honoured the University with an Athena SWAN bronze award, one of only seven institutional awards throughout the UK.
ECU’s Athena SWAN Charter was established in 2005 to encourage and recognise commitment to advancing the careers of women in science, technology, engineering, maths and medicine (STEMM) employment in higher education and research.
In May 2015 the charter was expanded to recognise work undertaken in arts, humanities, social sciences, business and law (AHSSBL), in professional and support roles, and for trans staff and students. The charter now recognises work undertaken to address gender equality more broadly, and not just barriers to progression that affect women.
This is the first time that Bradford has been recognised under the charter and opens the way for individual Faculties, Schools and Departments to apply for recognition in the future.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Brian Cantor said: “The University has a tremendous commitment to equality, diversity and inclusivity. We believe strongly that a vibrant intellectual atmosphere derives from a mix of people from different backgrounds.
“Achieving an Athena SWAN bronze award is testament to our continuing drive to reach our full potential by giving opportunity to the talents of all."
