Uninsured Driver Jailed Over Death of Seven-Year-Old Boy in Huddersfield

An uninsured driver has been jailed for three-and-a-half years following the death of seven-year-old Jack Rooke in a collision in Golcar, Huddersfield.

An uninsured driver has been jailed for 42 months following the death of a seven-year-old boy in Huddersfield.

Nathan Shaw, 35, of Tudor Street, Huddersfield, was sentenced at Leeds Crown Court after pleading guilty to causing death while driving uninsured and two offences of perverting the course of justice.

He was also disqualified from driving for 57 months.

Seven-year-old Jack Rooke died following a collision on Longfield Avenue in Golcar on 30 August 2023.

Emergency services were called at around 6pm after a BMW X4 being driven by Shaw collided with Jack in the road.

Jack received emergency treatment but died a short time later.

Shaw was arrested at the scene, with West Yorkshire Police's Major Collision Enquiry Team subsequently carrying out an in-depth investigation into the circumstances.

In a victim personal statement released following the sentencing, Jack's mother described the devastating impact his death continues to have on the family.

She said each day remained a struggle without her "beautiful and loving boy" and described how Jack's death had also affected his sisters, including Mya, who had lost her best friend.

She said: "It's hard to parent when you have been killed inside, I will never be who I used to be."

Detective Sergeant Nina Roper, who led the investigation, described Jack's death as an "absolute tragedy" and said the loss of such a loving and happy boy at such a young age had clearly been devastating for his family.

Police said their thoughts remain with Jack's family following Shaw's sentencing.
