Two jailed for murder of Amriz Iqbal

Two men have been jailed for more than 40 years for the killing of Amriz Iqbal.

Mohammed Nisar Khan and Tony Grant were found guilty by a jury at Bradford Crown Court of the murder of Mr Iqbal, 40, who was struck by a Kia Sedona and then assaulted in Sandford Road, Bradford on 3 October last year.

Both Khan, 41, of Holme Lane, Bradford and Grant, 39, of Queens Road, Bradford, were sentenced to life imprisonment with minimum terms of 26 years and 17 years respectively.

Khan’s term also included a discretionary life sentence for the attempted murder of Adnan Ahmed, who was also struck by the vehicle in the incident.

Also jailed for 17 years was Salman Ismail, who was found guilty of offences of arson and to pervert the course of justice.

Ismail, 31, of West Street in Undercliffe, was convicted of an arson attack on a petrol station in Whitehall Road, Birkenshaw on the evening of 3 October. The premises had CCTV which was of relevance to the case.

The same premises was also subject to an attempted robbery a day later, where armed suspects made demands for the footage.

Following the sentencing, Detective Chief Inspector Ian Scott, Senior Investigating Officer, said: “Our sympathies remain with the family of Amriz Iqbal and we hope this outcome will give them some comfort as they continue to try and rebuild their lives without him.

“Amriz lost his life in such horrific circumstances and these men will now be spending a long time in prison, where they will be able to reflect on their actions which were both cowardly and brutal.

“This has been a complex investigation and I would like to thank everyone involved whose efforts have brought it to a successful conclusion.”

The family of Amriz Iqbal also issued a statement: “Throughout this trial we have heard much about the defendants and very little about the victim, Amriz Iqbal. Today is about Amriz Iqbal who was lovingly referred to as Major by those who were nearest and dearest to him.

“Amriz above and beyond anything was a wonderful human being who lived life to the fullest. He was a loyal and dutiful son to his mother, who only two years previous lost her oldest son, Parvaiz, to a sudden illness. Having to deal with the death of Amriz in such horrific circumstances such a short time after the death, one can only imagine the pain she has had to endure.”
