Tributes have been paid to Peter Kara, a former Buckinghamshire High Sheriff and long-serving Milton Keynes Community Foundation trustee, following his death.
Tributes have been paid to Peter Kara, a former Buckinghamshire High Sheriff who dedicated decades to charities, healthcare and community organisations in Milton Keynes and Buckinghamshire.
Mr Kara had an association spanning more than 30 years with Milton Keynes Community Foundation, the grant-making charity supporting community projects across the city.
He was appointed a trustee in 1995 and went on to serve in several senior positions, including as chair, chair of its property committee and vice-president.
He also served as High Sheriff of Buckinghamshire from 2017 to 2018.
Milton Keynes Community Foundation described Mr Kara as a man of "remarkable generosity, wisdom and integrity", and said he was a trusted and respected community champion.
Born in South Africa, Mr Kara later moved to England to study and qualified as an accountant. He had a long history of investing in private companies and providing financial and strategic advice to businesses.
He also spent more than 20 years as a mental health manager with the NHS and served on the boards of local NHS organisations.
During his year as High Sheriff, Mr Kara used the position to encourage wider discussion about mental health, with a particular focus on prevention and early intervention.
His death was also marked at a meeting of Buckinghamshire Council.
Council chairman John Chilver offered condolences to Mr Kara's family and friends, while Councillor Dev Dhillon described him as a "special person" who had touched the lives of many people.
Council members then stood for a minute's silence in his memory.
Milton Keynes Community Foundation said Mr Kara had been due to speak at its summer reception on the day he died, adding that Milton Keynes was a better place because of his generosity, leadership and commitment to helping others.
