West Yorkshire Police is warning people, particularly students and those who may be financially vulnerable, not to accept parcels on behalf of strangers in return for cash.
West Yorkshire Police has issued a warning about a growing trend in which people are offered money to accept parcels on behalf of others.
Police say criminals are recruiting people to receive packages as a way of moving illegal goods or stolen property without drawing attention to themselves.
Students and other people who may be looking to make extra money are among those being targeted, with individuals offered cash simply for taking delivery of a parcel.
However, police warn the packages could contain controlled drugs, offensive weapons or stolen goods. Anyone agreeing to receive or handle them could potentially find themselves investigated for offences including possession of drugs, handling stolen goods or money laundering.
Chief Inspector Michelle Swift said what might appear to be an easy favour or a way of earning quick cash could result in a police investigation and criminal record.
She said criminals may use social media platforms including Snapchat, Instagram, TikTok and Facebook to recruit people and urged anyone who feels something is not right to trust their instincts and report it.
Police are also encouraging parents to discuss the warning with university-age children so they understand the risks and the tactics that can be used by organised criminals.
