Police Appeal After Pensioner Conned Out Of £10,000

Police have released images of two men they wish to speak to in connection with an 80-year-old man being conned out of £10,000 in Moss Side.

Between 1.15pm and 3.30pm on Wednesday 15 June 2016, the victim was approached by two other men on Moss Lane East.

One of the men told him he had won £500,000 on the lottery but he did not have a bank account so told the victim that he would share the winnings with him if he gave him £10,000.

All three men drove to the victim’s home address to collect his passport and bank card before driving to the Natwest bank on Wilmslow Road, Didsbury where he withdrew £5,000.

The two men then drove the victim back to his home address in Didsbury where he took another £5,000 and returned to the car.

All three drove down to Withington because one of the men claimed he needed to go to a chemist but claimed he could not collect the medication because he was under 50.

The victim went inside a chemist with £5 from one of the men and the lottery ticket for security but when he returned the car and his cash were gone.

He later tried to claim the money on the ticket but found out it was fake.

Officers have been following a number of enquiries and have now released images of two men they wish to speak to in connection with the incident.

Detective Constable Lucia Barnes, of GMP’s City of Manchester team, said: “This was a shameless swindling of a vulnerable 80-year-old man who is still very distressed and suffers flashbacks of this incident.

“We would urge anybody that recognises the men in these pictures, or anybody who was in the area at the time and may have information that could help us with our investigation, to come forward.”

Anyone with information should call police on 101 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
