New Jobs And Economy Boost Promised In 20-year Regional Plan

Bradford district is it has been claimed to benefit from a revised regional plan which sets out a strategy to create thousands of new jobs created over the next 20 years.

The revised Strategic Economic Plan (SEP) for Leeds City Region (of which Bradford Council is a member), launched this week, outlines how the Leeds City Region Enterprise Partnership (LEP) and West Yorkshire Combined Authority (CA) will transform the local economy over the next 20 years with the creation of 35,700 jobs across the region and work to grow the economy at a faster rate than the national average.

This is a revision of a 2014 LEP plan and includes ten projects to be delivered with public and private sector partners, as well as central government. They include improvements to transport networks, creation of jobs, more investment and working to reduce the risk of flooding to homes, communities and businesses.

This plan will have far-reaching benefits for the Bradford district in terms of getting a share of the 35,000 jobs and £3.7m extra economic growth. It will also mean further development of priority areas in Bradford, Bradford city centre, the Bradford/Shipley Canal Road Corridor and M62 Corridor Enterprise Zone sites (Gain Lane, Parry Land and Staithgate Lane) as key sites for creating jobs, housing and economic growth.

The LEP investment of £125m from 2011-2015 is already expected to reap rewards with 3,200 jobs to be created by 2020 and £1.4 billion in extra economic growth for the Leeds City Region.

Projects already achieved in Bradford include: access to superfast broadband for 40,000 households through £10m plus investment; New Bolton Woods regeneration kick-started; refurbishment of Shipley College with £119k Growth Deal investment; unlocked £51m of private sector investment through £5.9m LEP grant investment enabling 109 small and medium enterprises to create 835 jobs in the district.

Coun Susan Hinchcliffe, Leader of Bradford Council, said: "This Strategic Economic Plan sets out how economic growth for the district be achieved. We want to transform the lives of many people with the creation of jobs, better transport infrastructure and a NEET (young people not employment, education or training) - free region."
