A man who fled the country after being linked to a major Class A drugs conspiracy has been jailed for 14 years following an investigation by specialist West Yorkshire Police detectives.
A man involved in a drugs conspiracy that saw 20kg of heroin transported from Birmingham to Leeds during the first Covid lockdown has been jailed for 14 years.
Yakub Miah, 53, also known as Mohammed Kazi, was sentenced at Leeds Crown Court after being convicted of a series of Class A drug offences.
West Yorkshire Police's Programme Precision team built an evidential picture linking Miah to a conspiracy operating between 1 April and 23 May 2020.
Evidence gathered by detectives included encrypted phone messages, one of which contained an image showing drugs stacked inside Miah's flat at Newton Park Court in Leeds.
Miah was initially arrested in July 2020 but later fled the country while released under investigation and was subsequently charged in his absence.
Police enquiries eventually traced him to Ireland, where he was arrested in January 2026. He was extradited to the UK the following month to face trial.
Detectives also linked Miah to a drugs exchange observed at Allerton Park in Leeds on 31 May 2020, involving a taxi which had travelled from Leicester and a Mercedes.
Officers later stopped the taxi in Regent Street and discovered 2kg of heroin inside.
Further quantities of cocaine, crack cocaine and heroin were recovered when police executed a warrant at Miah's Newton Park Court address in May 2021.
Following a trial, Miah was convicted of conspiracy to supply heroin relating to the 20kg shipment, a second conspiracy charge involving the onward supply of 2kg of heroin, and possession with intent to supply cocaine, crack cocaine and heroin.
He was sentenced to 14 years in prison.
Two other men have also been sentenced in connection with the investigation.
Ali Hussain, 36, of Sunrise Court in Bradford, was jailed for seven years and five months in November 2025 after admitting conspiracy to supply Class A drugs relating to the transportation of the 20kg of heroin.
Shafiqul Islam Ali, 45, formerly of Grafton Street in Bradford, was sentenced to 14 years after being convicted in his absence of offences including conspiracy to supply heroin.
A warrant remains in place for Ali's arrest and police are appealing for information about his whereabouts.
Detective Inspector Chris Rukin described Miah as a "key player" in the criminal enterprise and said his attempt to evade justice by fleeing abroad had ultimately failed.
