A neglected former allotment site in Girlington is being transformed into a new community park featuring growing spaces, play equipment, exercise facilities and areas designed to support wildlife.
Work has begun to transform a neglected and overgrown former allotment site in Girlington, Bradford, into a new green space for the local community.
The site on Whetley Grove will become Whetley Grove Community Park through a partnership between Bradford Council and Active Bradford's JU:MP programme, which is funded by Sport England.
The project will retain six allotment plots, while the existing allotment soil will be removed and replaced with certified clean topsoil suitable for growing fruit and vegetables.
Plans also include new seating and picnic benches, open grassed areas and a circular walking path around the site.
For younger visitors, there will be natural play features, landscaped mounds, balance beams and a small climbing frame, while a mini outdoor gym will provide opportunities for exercise.
New shrubs, bird boxes and habitat improvements will also be introduced, alongside areas specifically designed to encourage biodiversity and support local wildlife.
Councillor Ian Walker, Bradford Council's Portfolio Holder for Neighbourhoods and Communities, said the project would turn a neglected site into an amenity for people of all ages, whether they want to enjoy nature, use the play areas or get involved in growing.
James Brown, CEO of Active Bradford, said the organisation was delighted to invest in a community space which would give Girlington residents more opportunities to be active.
Work is already underway and is expected to be completed by the end of December.
