Five teens arrested over Bury ‘hate incident’

Five teenagers have been arrested following a hate incident in Bury.

Greater Manchester Police said that shortly after 3.30pm on Monday 11 February 2019, a 15-year-old boy was subjected to homophobic abuse while walking along Manchester Road.

A brief confrontation took place on Manchester Road Park before the boy was assaulted by a number of males.

The teenager was taken to hospital for treatment for head injuries and is now recovering at home.

On Tuesday a 15-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of assault. Later on, a further four teenage boys – aged 14, 14, 14 and 15 – were also arrested on suspicion of assault.

The teenagers have all been questioned and bailed pending further enquiries.

Officers are appealing for anyone with information to get in touch.

Chief Inspector Phil Spurgeon, of GMP’s Bury district, said: “An innocent teenager was subjected to a sickening attack as he walked down the street and we are doing all we can to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.

“Thankfully, the boy is now recovering at home with his family but hate crime has no place on our streets and we are treating this very seriously.

“Whilst we have arrested five boys as part of our investigation, I would encourage any witnesses or anyone with any information to get in touch as soon as possible.”
