The first phase of major improvements to Brighouse town centre has been completed, with work already under way on the next stage of the regeneration programme.
The first phase of a major regeneration project aimed at transforming Brighouse town centre has been completed.
Esh Construction has delivered extensive infrastructure and public realm improvements on behalf of Calderdale Council and the Brighouse Town Deal Board as part of the wider £19.1 million Brighouse Town Deal programme.
The completed phase has seen sections of Commercial Street, Market Street and Briggate revitalised, alongside significant improvements to Thornton Square.
Work has included new footpaths and carriageways, drainage improvements, street lighting, landscaping and new street furniture.
New tree pits incorporating sustainable water retention systems have also been installed, while granite, sandstone and porphyry paving has been used throughout parts of the scheme.
Pedestrian safety measures include new automatic and removable bollards.
The project is being delivered in three phases, with work planned to minimise disruption and maintain access for businesses, residents and visitors.
Calderdale Council says it has also reviewed elements of the scheme following discussions with businesses and shoppers, including retaining parking spaces and maintaining through traffic on Commercial Street.
Councillor Darren Commons, the council's Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, said the improvements were designed to give Brighouse high street an additional boost and encourage more people to visit, shop and spend time in the town.
Work has already begun on the second phase, focusing on Bethel Street, Canal Street and Ship Street.
That stage is expected to continue until spring 2027, with the final phase of the programme scheduled for completion in summer 2027.
