Bradford's Special Olympians get civic send-off

    Bradford's Special Olympians are to receive a civic send-off.

    Five athletes and one coach from the Bradford district will be representing Team GB in the Special Olympic Games in Abu Dhabi this month.

    The 2019 Special Olympics World Summer Games is a multi-sport event for athletes with intellectual disabilities.

    The Deputy Lord Mayor of Bradford Coun Martin Smith will be joined by Bradford Council Leader Coun Susan Hinchcliffe, Coun Sarah Ferriby, Executive Member for Healthy People and Places and Deputy Lord Mayor of Keighley Town Council to give them a special send-off on Wednesday 6 March from Keighley Civic Centre.

    The Special Olympic Games will take place in Abu Dhabi from Thursday 14 March until Thursday 21 March.

    The successful athletes from Bradford representing Team GB are:

    •          Neil Hartley - Basketball.

    •          Ella Curtis - Cycling

    •          James Reed-Griffiths - Equestrian

    •          T-Jay Wilson - Equestrian

    •          Mark Rhodes - Golf

    Tim Curtis is a cycling coach who will be going with Team GB.

    Hilary White, Chair of BDSL, said “We are both delighted and proud to have 5 athletes and 1 coach from the Bradford district picked to represent Team GB in this Year’s World Special Olympic Games, it goes to show that hard work, dedication and commitment pays off. We wish them lots of luck and want them all to go to Abu Dhabi and enjoy themselves and do their best."

    Coun Sarah Ferriby, Bradford Council's Executive Member for Healthy People and Healthy Places, said:  "We wish our Bradford athletes and coach lots of luck in the Special Olympic Games.  We are very proud of what they have achieved and they will be representing themselves and the Bradford district."
