Bradford Youngsters to Mark World Food Day with Cookery Challenge

Young people from across the Bradford District will take part in a morning of cooking and learning at Darley Street Market as part of World Food Day 2026.

Young people from across the Bradford District are preparing to mark World Food Day 2026 with a special event focusing on healthy eating, sustainability and reducing food waste.

The event will take place at FoodSavers Cookery School in Darley Street Market on Friday 16 October, from 10am until midday.

Working in partnership with Living Well Schools, the cookery school will welcome six groups of primary-aged children and home-educated learners for a morning of practical cooking, learning and discovery.

The event forms part of this year's World Food Day, which has the international theme “Innovate Today. Nourish Tomorrow.”

Activities will take place in the market's Courtyard, where children will participate in interactive cookery workshops and prepare and taste dishes while learning more about the links between food choices, waste, sustainability and global food security.

Students have also been given a World Food Day challenge to complete at school and at home, with prizes recognising creativity, participation and teamwork.

FoodSavers Cookery School says it has worked with more than 30 schools and colleges since the city centre market opened, as well as hundreds of children and families during school holidays.

Councillor Ian Walker, Bradford Council's Executive Member for Neighbourhoods and Communities, said:

“World Food Day is a great opportunity to celebrate that work while inspiring young people to think about healthy eating, food waste and sustainability.”

Soraya Overend, Manager of FoodSavers Cookery School, said:

“Cookery is a life skill. When children discover they can prepare something nutritious, affordable and delicious themselves, it builds confidence that lasts far beyond the kitchen.”

World Food Day is led internationally by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and aims to highlight global food challenges and the importance of access to nutritious food.
