Fundraising led by Rotary groups in Bradford and West Yorkshire will help provide clean-water filters to communities affected by catastrophic flooding in Nepal.
Rotary groups in Bradford and West Yorkshire have raised around £4,000 to help provide clean drinking water to families affected by catastrophic flooding in Nepal.
The Rotary Club of Adventurers and Bradford West Rotary Club raised £1,000 during a two-day bucket collection at Tesco Great Horton Road in Bradford on 29 and 30 August.
Further fundraising by the Huddersfield to Ukraine Humanitarian Aid project raised more than £3,000, including a £600 donation from the Rotary Club of Shipley, taking the overall appeal total to approximately £4,000.
Organisers say the money will be used to purchase clean-water filters through AQUABOX, helping families whose water supplies have been contaminated or disrupted by the disaster.
They estimate the filters funded by the donations could provide 36 million litres of clean drinking water each year for five years – around 180 million litres in total.
The appeal follows devastating flash flooding in Nepal triggered by a glacier collapse and landslide close to the country's border with China.
By 31 August, Nepalese authorities had confirmed 903 deaths with more than 4,200 people still missing. Those figures were also reported by the United Nations at the time.
Humanitarian assessments at that stage indicated around 65,000 people required emergency water, sanitation and hygiene assistance.
Aneela Ahmed, President of the Rotary Club of Adventurers, thanked everyone who contributed, as well as Tesco Great Horton Road, its Community Champion Sameera and colleagues for hosting the collection.
She said the generosity shown would help families in Nepal gain access to safer drinking water when they need it most.
The participating Rotary groups have also thanked shoppers, volunteers and supporters and are encouraging people to continue supporting reputable humanitarian appeals as relief and recovery efforts continue.
