A Bradford man has been jailed for six years and three months after admitting the manslaughter of a 72-year-old man who was fatally injured outside his home in Crofton.
A Bradford man has been jailed for six years and three months for the manslaughter of a 72-year-old man who was assaulted on the doorstep of his home in Wakefield.
Hamza Shafique, 28, of Maidstone Street, Bradford, pleaded guilty to manslaughter at Leeds Crown Court on Monday.
The victim, Stephen Jedynak, was found unresponsive at his home in Thorntree Court, Crofton, on Christmas Eve last year.
He was taken to Pinderfields Hospital but died on 27 December.
His death was referred to police by the Coroner’s Office on 31 December. A murder investigation was subsequently launched after a forensic post-mortem examination found serious head injuries consistent with an assault.
Detectives examining CCTV footage established that Mr Jedynak had been assaulted during an altercation outside his home on 23 December.
The footage showed Shafique punching him to the side of the head, causing the 72-year-old to strike his head against the front door before falling to the ground.
Shafique then moved Mr Jedynak inside the property, closed the door and drove away.
Police enquiries into the vehicle led to Shafique being arrested on 8 January alongside two other men, aged 32 and 23. All three were initially arrested on suspicion of murder and being concerned in the supply of Class A drugs.
A fourth man, aged 36, was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender.
Shafique was subsequently charged with manslaughter and remanded in custody.
Detective Chief Inspector Stacey Atkinson, of West Yorkshire Police, said Mr Jedynak was a vulnerable man who lived alone and “did not deserve to lose his life in such a harsh and unnecessary way”.
His family described Stephen as a dad, brother and uncle who is greatly missed, particularly at family gatherings where he would reminisce about their childhood with younger generations.
Enquiries relating to the separate drugs matters remain ongoing.
