A 24-year-old man has been sentenced to 21 months in prison after deliberately ramming a police vehicle with two officers inside, causing more than £6,000 worth of damage.
A Bradford man has been jailed after ramming a police car during a roadside stop in Huddersfield, putting two officers at risk and causing more than £6,000 worth of damage.
Karam Tofeek, 24, of Leaventhorpe Lane, Bradford, was sentenced at Leeds Crown Court on Wednesday, 7 October, after being found guilty of dangerous driving.
He received a prison sentence of one year and nine months, was disqualified from driving for three years and seven months, and was ordered to pay a £187 fine.
Police vehicle rammed during roadside stop
The incident happened on 23 July 2026, when officers stopped Tofeek's grey BMW X5 on Leeds Road in Bradley, Huddersfield.
Police suspected that the vehicle was being driven without insurance.
Tofeek initially complied with officers' instructions and pulled over at the side of the road.
However, when asked to switch off his engine, he refused.
He then drove his BMW into the police vehicle parked in front of him, despite two officers still being inside.
Officers repeatedly instructed Tofeek to turn off the engine, but he continued to refuse, forcing them to intervene and detain him.
Neither officer was injured during the incident.
Found guilty following trial
Tofeek was found guilty of dangerous driving following a trial at Leeds Crown Court on 16 September.
He returned to court on 7 October for sentencing.
The collision caused more than £6,000 worth of damage to the police vehicle.
Police condemn dangerous behaviour
Sergeant Andrew Johnson said the incident demonstrated the dangers officers can face while carrying out routine policing duties.
"Two officers were put in an extremely dangerous situation when the defendant rammed their police vehicle. Thankfully, neither was seriously injured, but this incident highlights the very real risks our officers face every day."
He praised the professionalism and bravery of officers responding to unpredictable situations.
Sergeant Johnson welcomed the sentence, saying it reflected the seriousness of Tofeek's actions and sent a clear message that putting police officers and other road users at risk would not be tolerated.
He added that West Yorkshire Police's Roads Policing officers remain committed to keeping communities safe and preventing criminals from using the region's roads.
