Bradford Council is encouraging residents to take part in a national consultation which could lead to tighter restrictions on noisy fireworks and other pyrotechnics.

Bradford Council is urging residents to have their say on proposals which could lead to tighter restrictions on the sale and use of noisy fireworks.

A national Government consultation on fireworks and pyrotechnics is currently underway and will remain open until midnight on Wednesday 7 October.

Individuals, businesses and organisations are being asked for their views on proposals including restricting the availability of noisier fireworks to the general public.

The consultation is also considering adding further items to the list of banned pyrotechnic products and reviewing regulations covering products currently classified as lower risk.

Bradford Council is encouraging people across the district to participate as part of its ‘Bang Out of Order’ campaign, which highlights the impact of loud fireworks throughout the year and particularly late at night.

The council says residents have complained about fireworks disturbing sleep, upsetting pets and wildlife and causing particular distress to people with noise sensitivities or conditions such as PTSD.

Council officers have also been working with local wedding venues to encourage them to stop the use of fireworks during celebrations, as well as working with local campaign groups, businesses and community organisations.

Councillor Ian Walker, Bradford Council's Executive Member for Neighbourhoods and Communities, said fireworks had been a source of frustration for residents for many years.

He added: “We would encourage people to take part in this consultation and try to get national laws changed which will finally cut the noise and distress experienced by so many.”

The national consultation closes on 7 October, with responses intended to help inform potential changes to fireworks legislation.
